Unique launch planned by BMW in Detroit
When the North American International Auto Show opens in Detroit this week, German car giant BMW will take the unprecedented step of launching an entire new series of cars. The next-generation 6-Series Gran Coupe, Convertible and Coupe will all debut at the US motor show, which starts on 9th January.
All the next-generation 6-Series models have been given a more sporty look, with more luxury on display in the cabin space. The BMW infotainment package and ConnectedDrive navigation system will be standard across the range. Distinctive features of the new range include a sports exhaust system for petrol models, which will have a special valve to match the model's performance with a suitable growl. There is a range of improvements in aerodynamics, and Efficient Dynamics technology will make diesel and petrol six-cylinder models even more fuel efficient.
All the featured engines have met the stringent EU6 emission standards and have an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Styling changes for the new generation include metallic paint colours, LED lights and a nine-bar grille; the old grille was ten-bar.
More news about the UK model line-up will be revealed later this month, including specifications and pricing. BMW must be optimistic about the prospect of orders, as almost 80,000 outgoing models have been purchased worldwide over the last three years. The most popular model has been the Gran Coupe, which has accounted for almost 50% of 6-Series sales.
