Happy Birthday to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is 20 this year and the company celebrated this milestone for the world's number one van with over 250 guests at the Mercedes-Benz Düsseldorf plant in Germany. The guests included politicians, the media and employees, with the latter including representatives from production sites in Argentina, China, Russia and the US. The Sprinter first appeared in showrooms in 1995 and is now available to buy in more than 130 international markets. Over 2.9 million Sprinter vans have been sold since production commenced.
German first minster Hannelore Kraft was at the celebration to offer her congratulations. She said: "The Sprinter not only has a 20-year success story behind it, but also outstanding future prospects - thanks to the decision to make the Mercedes-Benz plant in Düsseldorf a competence centre for global Sprinter production and the commitment made to back the highly qualified and reliable personnel here at the site over the long term. I am delighted by both of these aspects and see them as a vote of confidence - in the site and the workforce."
The Sprinter has maintained its place as a bestseller in its segment over a 20-year period, with more than 186,000 sold last year. Mercedes production staff claim that the reason for the van's success is the consistent standard of reliability, quality and customer orientation.
Success in the future, although not guaranteed, looks highly likely due to Mercedes' long-term strategy of maintaining its top production team.
