Geneva debut for Mercedes 'Green Monster'
A lot has been written about Land Rover's long-serving Defender; however, Mercedes has its own long-serving off-roader in the shape of the G-Wagen, which is unbelievable 36 years old. Recent pictures have emerged on the internet of a new version of the model, which has been tuned up and given a facelift. It is set to make its debut at next week's Geneva Motor Show.
The new car, which bears the nickname 'Green Monster', was seen out on the roads undergoing tests this winter and it is highly likely that a production version will be in the showrooms in the near future. This new model is expected to have 37-inch tyres and a 450mm ground clearance. The G-Wagen G500 will be a scaled down version of the six-wheel drive G63 AMG and will use the same tough industrial-strength platform and hardware suitable for off-road driving; however, it will have four wheels rather than six.
Under the bonnet is a 5.5-litre unit that delivers 400bhp. This is slightly less powerful than the six-wheel version and you can expect the price to reflect the more down-to-earth features of the G500. The six-wheeler was not a big seller; with a price tag of £370,000, this is understandable. Mercedes is currently keeping quiet about the price of the G500. There is not long to wait to see what the finished model will look like when it is put on display in Geneva.
