Front-wheel drive for next-generation Mercedes SLK

German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz will offer the new-generation SLK with front-wheel drive. A recent report indicates that Mercedes wants to create a model that will be a realistic rival to the Porsche Panamera and the Audi TT. Technically the company already has the CLS and the SLK in competition with the Audi and Porsche models; however, the new SLK will use the same platform as the A-Class, which is set to arrive in showrooms in 2017 or 2018.

The bottom line is that the new SLK will be front-wheel drive; however, if Mercedes decides to bring out a true AMG model, this will more than likely be four-wheel drive. The new version will not have a solid roof; instead, it will be manufactured as a soft-top roadster and a coupe. The advantage to buyers is that the price will be significantly lower than the current model.

This new development by Mercedes is part of the company's plans to become the world's number one luxury car maker by 2020. The current Mercedes SLK has been on the scene since 2011 and is made in Bremen, Germany. The car has a choice of engines, including 1.8-litre petrol, 2.1-litre diesel, V8 and V6, and the transmission can be either six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic. The range-topping SLK 55 has a top speed of 155mph and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in an extremely fast 4.1 seconds.
