Concept Mercedes self-drive car spotted
We must wait until January 2015 to get a proper look at the design of the Mercedes self-driving car, as the German luxury cars company will reveal the concept at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. There have been some clues in the form of pictures coming out of Germany of a heavily-disguised pod-like concept vehicle. The company claims that its new car will be more "emotional" than the recent well-publicised Google model, which Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz design director, described as "more like a device, a piece of public transport".
Mr Wagener added: "We have already shown part of our concept's proposed interior, and we will show a vision for the whole exterior soon. There is no doubt it is an exciting opportunity, but at this stage we are simply exploring possibilities, not confirming how it will be. I'm not very keen on process design - finding a separate face for an electric car or a fuel cell car or an autonomous car."
Mercedes has already revealed the new interior design of the car, which emphasises the freedom inside the cabin made possible by cutting-edge technology utilising gesture, touch and eye control. The cabin of the concept self-drive will by lounge-style and will allow passengers to face each other so that they can interact during a trip.
Mercedes says that the self-driving vehicle will become extremely commonplace and accepted socially on the streets of cities in the future, and will allow occupants to utilise their travel time in a diversity of ways.
