The new BMW i8
The BMW i8 is not only the first of its breed but is also a remarkably good car. The i8 is not a tyre-smoking speedster and even though the Porsche 911 is possibly better on bends, the i8 is a precision tool and is a sports car for the modern world.
The look of this car is not only for turning heads in the street but has also been designed as a representation of the cutting-edge technology that underpins it.
This is the second in the family of low-emission BMW i cars. Just like the i3 EV city, the i8 has a light carbon fibre body sitting on an aluminium chassis. It is a plug-in hybrid but even with a load of heavy batteries it comes in lighter than Audi's R8.
The i8 feels like a revolutionary sports car and delivers the exceptional performance expected from a BMW. It achieves 135mpg fuel economy and 49g/km CO2 emissions.
The i8 costs just under £100,000; in addition to the high-tech body, this buys you an 8.8-inch satnav, parking sensors and head-up display.
Above all else, however, it is the car's design, which looks like nothing else on the road today, that will make the i8 desirable.
