BMW's SUV spring offensive
BMW is preparing the production-specification X4 SUV for unveiling in April at the New York Motor show. The new X4 is just part of the company's SUV campaign, which recently saw the release of a tweaked X3.
The X4 that will get its debut in New York is a sporting crossover and is as different to the X3 as the X6 is to the X5. There will be a range of four-cylinder and six-pot diesel and petrol engines on offer, along with an automatic gearbox (eight-speed) and a variable sports steering system.
Following close on the heels of the X4 will be the new X6, which will be on sale in Britain in November after its unveiling at the Moscow Motor Show in August. Over 200,000 X6 models have been sold since its launch in 2008. The new version, which insiders claim will be hardier, sportier and have a more athletic design, will build on the success of the first-generation X6.
The end of 2014 will see the launch of the X6M and the X5M, with more aggressive styling promised by the company. These models will use the 4.4-litre V8 engine from the first-generation X5M and X6M models.
