BMW rumoured to be contemplating another electric SUV
The latest hot rumour from the automotive luxury car segment is that BMW may be contemplating a new electric SUV. Reports from German magazine Wirtschaftswoche claim that the BMW board is looking into possible designs for a 100% electric SUV based on the X7. Any planned new model would be in addition to the BMW X5 eDrive, which is due in the showrooms next year.
The idea behind the rumour is that such a car would be developed with the sole aim of competing with the Tesla Model X; however, there are several reasons why this logic is flawed. By the time the new vehicle is up and running, the Tesla model would already be two years old model and probably not worth competing with.
Add to this the question of whether BMW has the technical ability to compete with Tesla, and the fact that the company does not have a supercharging network, and the rumour certainly looks flawed.BMW has made it clear on numerous occasions, however, that it plans to produce plug-in versions of its models by 2020. The company CEO, Harald Kruger, is said to be waiting to gauge public reaction to the Tesla Model X before making any decision.
The big question about any development of the X7 is how competitive it would it be against the Tesla. As always with BMW, the company will not be rushed into any project and will evaluate the facts carefully.
