Audi RS3 mule seen road testing in Germany
With reports of an RS3 mule having road tests outside the city of Nuburgring in Germany, there could be the possibility of the real car making an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring in preparation for a release in 2014.
Under the body of the S3 is probably a tuned version of the outgoing model's 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine. The power will have been increased a little to 360bhp and delivered via the all-wheel drive quattro system.
Audi is obviously looking at ways of reducing the weight of its new model, which is seen in the fact that it will be underpinned by the lightweight MQB platform. The MQB platform will make the RS3 lighter than the previous model, and the introduction of hi-tech materials developed by Audi in its Ultra program will also reduce the weight.
The reduction in weight should put its performance on a level with the Mercedes A45 AMG, which can go from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds.
The present RS3 was revealed only a short time before the A3 range was tweaked, and a newer version is being developed earlier than is normally expected. At present there are no details available about the price, but a rough estimate is that it will cost around £39,000.
