Audi closing in on Q1 debut
The smallest crossover ever produced by luxury German car manufacturer Audi - the Q1 - is receiving its finishing touches before making its debut and has recently been seen out and about wearing its production skin.
We can expect the Q1 to be introduced in 2016 and for it to be in the same mould as the successful Q3, with its inspiration well and truly taken from the Q5. The Q1 is small but you will need to look twice if it is placed alongside the Q3, which does not seem that much bigger.
The Q1 has the same size overhang at the front as its bigger brother, the Q5, and a slightly smaller overhang at the back. The Q1 sits lower to the ground and has a more aggressive rake to the back window and the front windscreen.
There is some sharing of parts between the Q1 and the A1; however, the platform is based on the Volkswagen MQB. We can also expect there be some sharing of powerplants, meaning various exciting engines such as a version of the four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbodiesel used in the A1. After the Q1 gets into the showrooms, we can expect to see an SQ1 following closely behind. This will satisfy Audi fans who want a small crossover that delivers high-performance and all-wheel drive.
