Making a reservation

What hours is our reservations department open?

Our reservations team are happy to answer any queries or make a booking for you between the hours of 8am-6pm Monday to Friday, 8am-12 noon on Saturdays. During these hours they are available by email ([email protected]), phone (0800 009 6938) and also via our online chat function at the bottom of the page. Unfortunately we are closed on Sundays and bank holidays (excluding Good Friday) but you can leave an offline message or call back request and we will get back to you at our earliest opportunity.

What does the rental charges include?

All our hires are fully inclusive of VAT, insurance and the relevant free miles for your hire period. Delivery, collection and other extras are payable and will be shown on your reservation quote screen.

What should I do if I need to amend or cancel my hire?

We understand that sometimes plans can change, therefore if you need to amend your hire within 24 hours of your hire start time (within opening hours), you must call us on 0800 009 6938 to make any amendments. For any other amendments you are able to make your changes over the phone, by email ([email protected]) or using the online chat function.
If you do need to cancel your hire we do not charge a cancellation fee on any hire cancelled with more than 24 hours’ notice (within operating hours).
If your plans do change and fall within the 24 hour window, there is just a £25 cancellation charge to cover any administration costs. Please note if you have booked a delivery and it is already on its way, then further charges will apply.

I can’t decide which vehicle group to book, who can help me?

AMT has one of the most extensive range of vehicles to hire in the market, so we are used to our customers being spoiled for choice and struggling to decide. If you get in touch with our reservations team they will be happy to help with recommendations.

Can I have an additional driver?

They must fulfil the same qualification criteria as the main driver and can be added onto the insurance for just £6 per day and must be present on collection of the vehicle. This will be limited to a maximum charge of £60 per driver per 28 days.

I am making a booking for someone else, how does that work?

We understand you may want to surprise someone with a car from our ultimate collection and want to keep it quiet. We will however need the payment-card to belong to the named driver. So, if you want to pay why not hire the vehicle in your name and add them on as a named driver at £6 per day subject to them fulfilling the same qualification criteria as the main driver (This will be limited to a maximum charge of £60 per driver per 28 days).

Do you guarantee make, model and colour?

In all cases we will do our best to fulfil your request, however only the ultimate collection bookings guarantee your vehicle choice. As other vehicles are booked by group, therefore we cannot guarantee the make, model or colour. If at any stage AMT cannot provide an alternative vehicle in the same category then you, where possible, will be automatically upgraded to the next available category.

Do deposits apply on all vehicles?

All vehicles require a holding deposit which will vary by vehicle group and is shown on your reservation quote page. This will be subsequently refunded in full if it is returned on time with no new damage, the correct fuel level and no fines, tolls or penalties incurred.

Collecting your hire car

Do you offer delivery and collection?

Pick-up and return of your vehicle is free from an AMT location. However, we are also happy to deliver and collect your hire vehicle anywhere on mainland UK whether it be an airport, train station, work or home address. Minimum hire periods may apply depending on your distance from the closest AMT location but we will always do our best to fulfil your requirement. How much fuel will I get in the vehicle on collection?

We supply all our vehicles with a minimum of a quarter tank, and all fuel levels will be displayed on the check sheet when you collect your vehicle. If the vehicle is returned under the level provided, then refuelling charges will apply at £1.95 per litre (excl. VAT). Unfortunately we cannot refund any unused fuel.

During your hire

I need to alter my hire dates during my rental. What should I do

Please call our reservations team or the AMT branch you collected from. We are happy to extend any hire as long as you require it and at any time (subject to payment and availability). We would advise all customers to book for the shortest period that they may require the vehicle for, as we can accept early returns if arranged however we cannot issue any refund for unused rental days.

Do you allow your vehicles to be taken outside the UK?

Unfortunately, this is a service we do not currently offer. Please check back again in the near future.

What happens If I damage the vehicle?

We understand that sometimes accidents can happen and we operate a fair wear and tear policy to allow for any minor damage, which falls in line with the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) guidelines. In circumstances where the damage falls outside this allowance, this will be assessed and charged accordingly up to the full excess amount per instance.

What should I do if I lose my key?

In cases where keys are lost, please contact our reservations department as soon as possible on 0800 009 6938, who will make arrangements to have the key replaced as soon as possible. The customer would be liable for the cost of a replacement, any recovery or delivery costs, the rental on the vehicle until the new key arrives, plus an administration charge.

What happens if I get a penalty or fine while driving

We ask that any penalties/fines incurred whilst you are renting the vehicle are paid by the driver and that you inform us accordingly. If a parking fine is received by AMT, an administration charge will apply regardless of the outcome of the fine or penalty, along with any settlement costs. These may arise from instances including but not limited to, parking illegally, speeding, failure to pay congestion zone or tolls etc.

Is there a mileage restriction?

Each vehicle has a variable mileage restriction and this is shown on your reservation quote, this ranges between 100-200 miles for a single hire day, between 300-400 miles per weekend hire and between 700-1000 miles for a week’s hire, up to a maximum of 2800-3000 per 28 days depending on the vehicle.

Driver requirements

What type of driving licence do I need to hire a car with AMT?

We accept both UK and non-UK driving licences at AMT. All hirers must have held their driving licence for at least two years. If you hold a foreign driving licence, this will need to be readable in English or accompanied with an international driving permit.

Are there any age restrictions for hiring a vehicle?

We offer car hire to those aged between 23 and 75 years of age during the dates of your rental period. For those aged 23-24, a young driver’s surcharge of £15 per day will apply to the rental price and will have access to the vehicles that show the minimum age 23 icon. Hirers that are aged 25-29 will have access to the vehicles that show the minimum age 25 icon and for those aged 30-75 enjoy access to any vehicle shown on our website. Please note the minimum age restrictions apply to all drivers whether they are the main or additional driver.

How long do I need to have held my driving licence

A vehicle can be hired to those who have held their full driving licence for at least 2 years.

Can I hire a car if I have any penalty points/endorsements?

For UK driving licence holders, we can allow up to 6 points on your licence for any minor offences within a 5 year period. If you have any major convictions on your licence within the past 5 years then we cannot provide hire to you. How does the insurance work?

Our rates include fully comprehensive insurance with a variable excess per vehicle (please see vehicle pages for more information). It covers usage for social, domestic, pleasure and for business purposes within the UK and we can cover overseas insurance with prior notice and will be subject to a foreign travel charge. Any tyre & windscreen damage are the responsibility of the hirer.

Our insurance does not cover use of vehicle for hire or reward. Due to insurance purposes, those with certain occupations (e.g. professional football player, students & non-EU armed forces) may have some restrictions in place, please contact the reservations team by email: [email protected] or by phone: 0800 009 6938 for further information.

What identification is required?

For UK residents and licence holders, from the 8th June 2015 the government will no longer be producing the paper counterpart of the driving licence and will no longer have any legal status. We are therefore required to conduct an online DVLA check which details your licence validity, this will apply to the main driver and any additional drivers before any hire can be released.

In order to conduct the online DVLA check, you can go onto the government website and create an online code using your driving licence number, national insurance number and home postcode. Upon collection of the vehicle, you will be asked to produce your driving licence, a utility bill (excl. mobile phone bill) and bank statement dated within the last 90 days from hire start date, along with a credit card in the main driver’s name. If you are paying by company credit card please contact our reservations department for further information.

For non-UK residents you will be asked to produce your passport, driving licence and credit card in the main driver’s name. Any additional drivers will be required to provide the same documents.

What method of payment can I use?

We accept VISA, MasterCard & American Express credit cards. These must be in the main drivers name and only one card can be used per rental.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash, cheque, prepaid payment cards or bank transfer under any circumstances.
